Paul's First Ponderings...

Well, what do you think of the new title for this column?  Let me hear from you and cast your vote for the best title.

One of the toughest tasks a church faces is adjusting to a new minister.  It’s sometimes difficult in the United Methodist System to trust the Bishop and Cabinet to appoint a suitable pastor. Often no one in the church knows much about the new minister.

A letter to Dear Abby appeared with this same concern:

“Dear Abby: What are we supposed to do?  The following letter was read to us from our new pastor:

‘I am happy to serve your church. I have many qualifications.  I've been a preacher with much success and also have had some success as a writer.  Some say I'm a good organizer.  I've been a leader most places I've been.

I’m over 50 years of age.  I have never preached in one place for more than three years.  In some places, I have left town after my work caused riots and disturbances.  I must admit that I have been in jail three or four times, but not because of any real wrongdoing.

My health is not too good, though I still get a great deal done.  The churches I have preached in have been small, though located in several large cities.

I’ve not gotten along well with religious leaders in towns where I have preached. In fact, some have threatened me and even attacked me physically.  I am not good at keeping records. I have been known to forget whom I baptized, however I shall do my best for you.’

What do you think, Abby?  How could they appoint an unhealthy, trouble-making, absentminded ex-jailbird?  Was the church crazy?  Oh, by the way, the letter was signed, the Apostle Paul.”

Well, I may share the name, but I am not the Apostle Paul.  I’m afraid I haven't caused riots or been beaten up by religious leaders or landed in jail (yet!) Ha.

I do promise to do my best for you and if I can be helpful, please call me at the office at 846-0221.  Call me any time; I’d like to hear from you if I can be helpful.  I look forward to getting to know each of you and sharing the wonderful ministry of Lynnewood with you.
