I’M GOING TO BE A GRANDFATHER

In case you missed our daughter’s announcement on Mother’s Day, Megan and Eric are expecting their first child in mid-November.  I’m going to be a grandfather!  Now, I’m going to have to stop whining about not having a grandchild.  Guess I’ll have to whine about the baby being so far away in Los Angeles where Eric was hired as a city fire fighter and where Megan and Eric just bought a house.

All whining aside, I am excited and delighted with the thought of a grandchild.  I can’t wait!  I’ve been pondering the responsibilities of being a grandfather, and let me share just a few duties with you: getting silly, letting go of parenting (by leaving that to the parents), laughing about crazy things, pretending a lot, loving and listening all the rest of my life, giving total and non-judgmental acceptance, and of course, sharing my presence in his or her life!

I’m totally ready to experience all the outbursts, tears, and unreasonableness because every child is also filled with love and laughter and excitement, sweetness and curiosity!

As Mamie Gene Cole wrote:

I am the Child.
All the world waits for my coming.
All the earth watches with interest to see what I shall become.
Civilization hangs in the balance,
For what I am, the world of tomorrow will be.
I am the Child.
I have come into your world, about which I know nothing.
I know nothing.
Why I came, I know not;
How I came, I know not;
I am curious; I am interested.

I am the Child.
You hold in my hand your destiny.
You determine largely whether I shall succeed or fail.
Give me, I pray you, those things that make for happiness.
Train me, I beg you, that I may be a blessing to the world.

I am totally ready to be a grandfather!  (and I’ll keep pondering what it means to be a grandparent.)
