A note from Pastor Kim …

Dear Friends,

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma once talked about the creative aspects of his work and noted, "So much of human expression is longing…" (Parade Magazine, January 30, 2005).

His words made me think of worship...how worship, like music, expresses our longing for something beyond ourselves. Worship, like music, can transcend words and express our yearning…our yearning for what is good, true, real. Worship expresses our longing for God.

We gather in worship with high hopes…at least I hope we do! And all of us involved in worship here at Lynnewood want to know about your high hopes, your yearning for worship. During the month of April, we will be asking everyone to fill out a worship feedback form. (There is one on the other side of this page, and they will also be available at worship and in various classes and committee meetings this month.) Please take several moments to ponder the questions and express your longing for our worship.

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has been called the greatest cellist on earth. Yet, his achievements (recording more than 50 albums and receiving 16 Grammys), have not led him towards complacency. He is also called the "Marco Polo of music." Yo-Yo Ma is a gifted classical musician who is constantly learning more about others’ music…in places like Iran, South Korea, Mongolia, Azerbaijan, India and Appalachia.

His success with music does not deter him from learning, experimenting and experiencing other types of music. Once again, I think there’s a message here for us, about worship. May we, too, be open to seeing and experiencing worship in new ways.

Asked what sends him out to explore other types of music, Yo-Yo Ma replied, "As human beings, we are always asking, ‘What are the little things we can do that could actually move things in a good way?’"

As we complete the worship survey forms, let us pray together to know how ‘we can actually move things in a good way.’ May we find a way that allows us to experience God’s tender, loving care all around us. I invite your prayers as well as your feedback as we evaluate our worship services. Thank you!

See you in worship
