CANDLEMAS DAY

As I ponder Epiphany, the Church season in which we celebrate the manifestation of God’s light and love in Jesus, I am reminded of Candlemas Day.

Candlemas is an ancient Christian festival held to celebrate the presentation of Jesus to God at the temple in Jerusalem. It got its name because the early Christians lit candles and had a parade before church every February 2nd. The candles symbolize the words of Simeon in the temple. He said Jesus was “a light to lighten the gentiles” (Luke 2:32). Most churches no longer have a Candlemas, but you may want to have one at home to remember Jesus this February.
