Lynnewood in the Redwoods (All Church Retreat)
September 2-4, 2011
Monte Toyon Retreat Center, Aptos, CA
Over 100 attended this year's Lynnewood in the Redwoods! It was our biggest ever, with record numbers of children in all age groups. There were close to 30 first-time attendees, including a Japanese exchange student attending with her host family. Rev. Heather and Rev. Diana organized the fun meet-and-greet Friday night session. Diana's husband Grady led us in song, and even wrote the rousing and popular, "We Call It Lynnewood". Lynnewood member Rosa P., a classical literature scholar, led the adult Saturday morning program. The Talent Show was a hit, as always. Grady was joined by 4 other guitars and a banjo during Campfire, and everyone got into a singing mood. Sunday's service wrapped up the weekend with the lesson of the Loaves and Fishes. Click here to read about the experience from a family attending for the first time.

Lynnewood held its first Blessing of the Animals on August 28. It was held earlier than typical in order to help raise funds for the Valley Humane Society. Dogs of all sizes and ages were blessed. Free treats and water were available for the dogs and for their people. The short service was led by Rev. Heather and Rev. Diana, with music provided by Michelle and led by Donna. Representatives from the Valley Humane Society were on hand to answer questions and to receive free-will donations.

For four Wednesday evenings in August, the Men's Group hosted a BBQ with all the fixin's. Each week highlighted a different theme: burgers and hot dogs, taco night, Hawaiian night, and a chili cook-off. Salads, sides, and desserts were provided, and the desserts were homemade! All enjoyed the good food and good fellowship.

Lynnewood
On Saturday, July 23rd, 2011, seventy plus children, youth, and adults enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, a bounce house, and lots of water activities that left everyone refreshed and exhausted! There were shooting water rockets and gutter boat races. There was watermelon seed spitting, wet sponge throwing, and fun in the wading pool for the youngest. The evening culminated in water balloon throwing for all! Thank you to the Children's Council for their planning and preparation and for all of their family members who were recruited to help. Special thanks to Erik J. and his crew who barbequed a summertime fare to perfection. Most importantly, thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the fun.

On July 3, Lynnewood welcomed Rev. Heather Leslie Hammer as lead pastor. Rev. Heather, we are glad you are here! Various committees presented Rev. Heather with welcome gifts to fill the empty basket, as loaves and fishes were multiplied by everyone pitching in. A large brunch in the courtyard after the service also welcomed Rev. Heather.

Pleasanton Sports Park
The Lynnewood co-ed softball team plays Monday evening/nights from April through July in the Church recreational league at the Pleasanton Sports Park. Fans are always welcome and are really appreciated by the players. Lynnewood typically has the largest fan group of any of our opponents, so let's keep up the support!

Middle schoolers and high schoolers gave up half a weekend to participate in the annual 30 Hour Famine. The focus was on Haiti and featured making 38 mini tents, each representing 10,000 children still living in tents in Haiti as a result of the devastating earthquake the previous year.

January, 2011
Truckee, California
A small group had tons of fun on the annual Lynnewood Snow Trip. We stayed at the VFW Hall in Truckee and skied/snowboarded at Alpine Meadows. It was spring skiing in January (very unusual) and all had a great time! Join us next year for a weekend of fun and fellowship for all ages and skiing/boarding/sledding types. Even sitting in the lodge and watching the goings-on is fun!
